Elbridge Henry Goss (1830-1908) was an active participant in the civic life of Melrose, Mass., and an author of books of local historical interest. He was an auditor, water registrar, trustee of the public library, alderman, treasurer of the Melrose Savings Bank, and member of the Massachusetts legislature. Ten companies comprised the 12th Regiment, Massachusetts Volunteer Militia: five from Boston, one from North Bridgewater, one from Abington, one from Weymouth, one from Stoughton, and one from Gloucester. After organization was completed, the regiment was ordered to Fort Warren in Boston Harbor.
